I had been wanting to try an arepa from Caracas for the longest time. Finally, this past week I went there and ordered the La de Pernil ($8) with roasted pork shoulder, tomato slices and spicy mango sauce. This was actually my first time ever having an arepa. It's a Venezuelan & Colombian staple, served at any meal of the day due to it's versatility. The arepa itself is made with ground maize dough or corn flour, which gives the 'sandwich' a very distinct taste. The crust is crisp, with a soft inside. The pork in the La de Pernil was tender and flavorful, with the mango sauce complementing it nicely, although I did not find it very spicy. For a snack one arepa is good, but if you're more hungry I'd suggest getting two and maybe some sides like the homemade chips and guacamole or the fried sweet plantains.
