Caramel Hazelnut Slice from Cake & C

Caramel Hazelnut Slice from Cake & C

You really can't beat a chocolate caramel slice for that afternoon sugar fix. Well, at least not until you've tried the Caramel Hazelnut slice ($5) from Cake & Co. I asked the girl behind the counter what she suggested from the mouth-watering display cabinet, and she hurriedly declared this slice to be her hands-down favourite. Which I immediately thought was interesting, since this is primarily a cake shop. I mean, it even says so in the name. I decided to take her word for it and man, was she right!! These babies will have you thinking about them when you wake in the middle of the night hankering for a snack (if you even do that). It starts with a chocolate brownie-like base, with a thick layer of caramel that is studded with big bits of hazelnuts. The caramel is exactly the right consistency: gooey but not too sweet. This is all finished off with a decadent layer of dark chocolate. I definitely appreciate the fact that this slice is very generous both with its size and the amount of hazelnuts, as some bakeries can be rather stingy.  I wish I had another one to eat as I write this post! And I'll have to wait until January 18th (while they're closed for the holidays) before I can get this caramel hazelnut perfection in my hands again (sigh). Cake & Co: 2/175 Ponsonby Road, Auckland.
